Oh boy, when the Goldie lights up it sure is a sight. Pre-lockdown, some of the world's best surfers were sampling the delights of Cyclone Gretel featuring Tyler Wright, Mick Fanning, Occy and more.
“Cyclone Gretel gave the Gold Coast pumping swell for days,” says lensman Aaron Pierce who snapped all you see throughout.
Forecast: Gold Coast
“The sand at Snapper was looking good so it was on, the unexpected thing was the banks at Burleigh were as perfect as you'll get, creating pits for 100m plus.
“I haven't shot much lately with the mediocre surf these last few months, this swell was a long time coming and I pretty much dropped everything and chased it along with 1,000 surfers. The crowds were stupid. Mikey Wright was the stand out at Snapper, charging from behind the rock like a wounded bull. It was good to see Mick Fanning out there stretching his leg with a brace on, it held him back a little but was still charging it even when some muppet dropped in on him with total disrespect for Mick.
“The swell on Tuesday was a bit lumpy, but come Wednesday morning it was lined up so perfect I thought I was dreaming. Burleigh was insane, long open barrels with really lite off shore winds which made it the best I've seen it their in a long time.
“I asked Occy how'd he get on and he said: “It's getting a bit much, I'm pretty tired now”, surfing for days will do that to anyone. Thursday I went down to Burleigh and yup it was still pumping, I just shook my head and laughed, sat down without my camera and just took it all in.
“It was a bonkers few days, a few boards broken, a lot of drop-ins but so many barrels, It was like here I'll send a few days of waves to you all, make the most of it as it might be the last time for a while you'll be able to surf! The days are changing now and I for one am thankful for cyclone Gretel, cheers.”
