Leon is a coastal department in northern Nicaragua, and home to the former capital city of Nicaragua, also called Leon, which is located on the Rio Chiquito. While Leon houses a number of lesser-known waves that can often be surfed alone (examples include El Transito and Playa Hermosa), most of the action is centered around Sirena Surf Lodge near Punta Miramar and Puerto Sandino. Las Penitas in northern Leon can also produce fun beach break barrels. Because the waves in Leon are located north of Lago de Nicaragua, they don’t get the all-day offshores that places like Popoyo have become famous for. Make sure the ideal tides for the waves you are chasing correspond to the morning offshores, or you may find yourself with a lot of swell but nowhere to surf.
