British Surfing’s Top Coach in New Training Role

Internationally renowned surf coach Barrie ‘Baz’ Hall has been appointed head of the British Surfing Association (BSA) Accredited Training Centre at Lusty Glaze Beach in Newquay. The BSA’s former National Coaching Director and long time mentor to the British surf team recently took up his new role in charge of surf coach training and education at The Training Centre based on the Cornish beach. Baz Hall is one of British Surfing’s best respected coaches, and was central to the creation of the BSA Surfing Coach Accreditation Scheme which qualifies surf coaches to deliver instruction at many surf schools in this country and abroad. In his position as head coach at the BSA, Mr Hall travelled the world to help governing bodies in other countries set up similar schemes and advise on best practices in surf coaching. The appointment as head of surf coach education at The Training Centre is a major coup for the Newquay company, which recently became an accredited centre for the BSA. Dave Whelan, manager of The Training Centre, commented: “It’s an honour to work with someone of Baz’s calibre. In the surf world, they don’t come more highly commended. I have no doubt that he will be a major asset to our business and to the trainee surf coaches who will benefit from his knowledge and expertise.” Surf coach training is a natural progression for The Training Centre, which was established as a beach lifeguard training company over 15 years ago. During this period, this Newquay organisation has qualified thousands of beach lifeguards, many of whom have gone on to become surf instructors. The BSA accreditation allows trainee surf coaches to take their beach lifeguard and surf instructor qualifications in the same place. “We’re very excited about the partnership which makes it more convenient for students to gain combined qualifications for careers in the surf industry,” commented Mr Whelan. In addition to BSA Level 1 and Level 2 surf coach training, The Training Centre is licensed to teach the International Surfing Association (ISA) Level 1 instructor courses and the world leading ISA surf contest Judging Course, which underlines its status as a major surf training academy. Surf supremo Baz Hall also agrees that the developments represent a positive move for British surfing and for everyone involved, including himself. “This is a fantastic career move for me,” said Mr Hall. “It allows me to get more involved with beach lifeguard training and other emergency rescue disciplines, and diversify my skills for the benefit of students. I can’t wait to get started!” The first BSA surf course at Lusty Glaze Beach will take place at the end of March, followed by a string of dates throughout the year.
